Webb goes 6 innings, Diamondbacks hit 3 homers in opening 4-2 win over Reds (AP)
The defending NL West champions opened the season the way they spent much of the last one: winning a close one. Brandon Webb pitched six innings Monday, and the light-hitting Arizona Diamondbacks piled up three solo homers in a 4-2 victory that dampened Dusty Baker’s debut as the Cincinnati Reds manager.

Diamondbacks put Randy Johnson, 2 others on disabled list to reach roster limit (AP)
Randy Johnson was one of three Diamondbacks placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday as Arizona finalized its opening day roster. Arizona also put catcher Miguel Montero and infielder Chad Tracy on the disabled list. The three moves were expected. The 44-year-old Johnson is coming off his second back operation in less than a year.

South Coast League shuts down after 1 season, hopes to return next year (AP)
The 1-year-old South Coast League, an independent circuit with teams in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, suspended operations for this season. The league cited unrest throughout its organization and weakness in the economy, which left no hope of having its finances in order for the scheduled opening day of May 15.
