Red Sox manager Terry Francona has been swamped with good wishes from his Boston brethren during the postseason. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick e-mailed him twice. Athletic director Gene DeFilippo of Boston College, ranked second in the nation in football, called. DeFilippo is quite a booster.

Nationals select 4 minor league contracts (AP)
The Washington Nationals selected the contracts of four minor leaguers Wednesday: right-hander Garrett Mock, left-hander Justin Jones, first baseman Josh Whitesell and outfielder Roger Bernadina. Mock, who hasn’t allowed an earned run in seven innings in the Arizona Fall League, went 2-7 with a 5.12 ERA at three levels in the minors in 2007.

Rockies go through a simulated game (AP)
Rockies backup catcher Chris Iannetta now knows what it feels like to get nailed by teammate Ubaldo Jimenez’s 100 mph heater. “It hurts,” Iannetta said with a laugh. The Rockies went through a simulated game Friday, and Jeff Francis and Jimenez took turns pitching to hitters. Jimenez hit Iannetta and Willy Taveras with pitches.
