    Notes from Thursday’s games (AP)

Last-minute starter Owings hits, pitches Diamondbacks past Pirates 8-0 (AP)

Arizona manager Bob Melvin made a great last-minute move by putting Micah Owings into his lineup. Pitching him was a good idea, too. Owings was 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs to boost the Diamondbacks over the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0 Thursday and stop a three-game losing streak for the NL West leaders.

Diamondbacks push back Webb because of weather worries (AP)

The Arizona Diamondbacks scratched staff ace Brandon Webb on Thursday in Pittsburgh because a poor weather forecast made manager Bob Melvin hesitant to start him in a game that might be significantly delayed. Micah Owings (7-8), who was to have pitched Friday night at Colorado, started Thursday afternoon’s game.

Owings replaces Webb as Diamondbacks starter vs. Pirates (PA SportsTicker)

The Arizona Diamondbacks replaced ace Brandon Webb as Thursday’s starting pitcher against the Pittsburgh Pirates with fellow righthander Micah Owings.

Rockies, Padres win, move up in NL West; Diamondbacks lose 5-1 in Pittsburgh (AP)

When Colorado’s offense had a rare quiet night Josh Fogg stepped up. And with a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, the Rockies found themselves in unfamiliar territory. Fourteen games over .500. Winners of 10 straight. Not only in the thick of a wild-card race, but the NL West division chase [...]

Beckett, Peavy easy aces for Cy Young (Yahoo! Sports)

Pitching equals playoffs. Josh Beckett and Jake Peavy lead the pack for Cy Young honors.

Adam LaRoche, Matt Morris lead Pirates past skidding Arizona, 5-1 (AP)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are running into major difficulty in the most unlikely of places. Adam LaRoche drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Matt Morris pitched effectively over seven innings as the Pirates beat Arizona for the second night in a row, a 5-1 decision Wednesday that further tightened the NL West [...]

    All-around excellence (Yahoo! Sports)

Infielders Tulowitzki and Pedroia’s contributions with bat and glove make them the top rookies.

Pirates hold off D-backs’ comeback, win 6-5 to end 9-game slide (AP)

Arizona is having a tough time closing out the NL West. Pinch-hitter Josh Phelps singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth after Pittsburgh blew a four-run lead in the top of the inning, and the Pirates halted a nine-game losing streak by beating the Diamondbacks 6-5 on Tuesday night. Arizona, which [...]
