    The big matchup between Big Z and the Big Unit never materialized. He became the first pitcher in three years to win his first eight starts, tossing his 13th career complete game to help Arizona beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 on Thursday.

    Doctor pronounces Arizona’s Davis cancer-free (AP)

    Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Doug Davis said he has been pronounced cancer free after a sophisticated test showed no spread of the disease. Davis said he got the news from surgeon Dr. Bob Evani, who removed the pitcher’s cancerous thyroid gland on April 10. “The cancer did not spread and it will not spread from here on out,” Davis said Thursday.

    That new contract in the works for Brandon Webb might have grown a few digits. Webb became the first pitcher in three years to win his first eight starts, pitching his 13th career complete game to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 on Thursday. The 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in his first complete game of the year.
